Early design considerations

When we were making our first design we really got into honeycombes. We thought that a chair would be very stong if there was honeycombs built into the structure of our chair. We also thought that if you were going to make a back rest that was straight then it should not be the tall because a straight bak rest made out of cardboard is not the strong. So we decided to go with a backrest that had an indent at the end. These two things, the honeycombes built into the chair and the titled backrest, were two things that we thought would help our chair be a better chair.

Final design considerations

We Decided that our first prototype was very strong, for it's little size and seeing that it is made out of only index cards, so we decided to keep it to make into a final draft. We only changed one thing as we saw as we were building it. We noticed that the backrest that we made was indented too much so we had to decrease the angle of that a bit. We thought that this would be better because not only would it hold better, but the person sitting on it would have more comfort.

How we scaled up our prototype

When we schaled up our prototype we wanted to see at around where we wanted the height and the width to be. In order to find approximately how big it should be we measured a normal, plastic, blue chair from the math room. We took all of our measurements that we needed from that chair. Then we measured the exact same parts of our final prototype. This so that we could see how many times our small, little prototype had to be multiplied to get the bigger chair. To do this we divided the meaurements of a real chair by the measurements of our prototype to see how many times it would have to be mutliplied. We got about 11 times so we multiplied every part of our protoype by 11, except for the angles. As we did this we noticed that the indented part of our chair was too big so we chaled that down a bit.

Teamwork reflections

As we started to build or life-size chair we decided not to put the indent. We thought that this would be best because the indent was very complicted and we thought that if you make a short, straight part and then an indent it's not like the perosn would lean on the indent so we just cut off the indent and left it as a short, straight peice. We worked hard as a group to think of ways to make our chair better as we were building, but except for the indent our first design was straight on.

Improvements

We think that next time we should really think about how our chair could be more comfortable to the person sitting on it. Should it be a bit taller, bigger? We also think that next time, if we were to do this again, we would think about this back rest thing because if you think it through well then it is awsome and can some out as a great thing.
