Chairity is a school-based social enterprise that puts kids in a position to market a real product and make a difference in the world. It's about giving to others as a vehicle for technical and character education.
Here teams of young engineers from the 6th grade class at the Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science & Engineering have been challenged to design, build, and market a chair made only of recycled corrugated cardboard that can safely and comfortably support an adult. This task requires students to explore basic principles and methods of engineering design process, including measurement, structural thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and the use of digital tools to design and present their solutions to the world. Additionally, this project adheres to the green design principle of carbon neutrality, a keystone idea for our next generation of designers and engineers.
On this site, students present their cardboard creations to the public in a blind, online auction. All proceeds will go to the non-profit organization of the team's choosing.
Please help support this project by considering the purchase of one of these unique pieces of work!
